How To Wash Cloth Diapers

This is how I recommend washing my cloth diapers; this may or may not be the same regimen that you're following for another brand.
  • A new diaper does not have to be washed prior to wearing because all of my fabrics are pre-washed. I do not use elastic that needs to be shrunk – so you’re diaper will be true-to-size without washing, after the first wash, and after the hundredth wash.
  • For regular washing, I recommend the following detergents: Ecover, Seventh Generation, Allen’s Naturally, and Arm & Hammer with Oxi Clean or Essentials.
  • I also recommend the following softeners (yes, you can use softeners on diapers): Seventh Generation, or Ecover.
  • To wash a normal load (ie – no heavy stains): half the recommended amount of laundry detergent, hot wash, cold rinse, medium heat dry, or line dry. Sometimes I machine dry until the diapers are almost dry, then hang on the line until completely dry.
  • To wash heavily stained/soiled diapers: half the recommended amount of laundry detergent, cold wash, hot wash, cold rinse, medium heat dry, or line dry.
To strip diapers (removes buildup from detergents/sanitizes diapers): add a ¼ cup of non-chlorine bleach to your washer’s dispenser (no detergent yet); cold rinse, hot wash, cold rinse. Do not dry (yet). Wash again: half the recommended amount of laundry detergent, hot wash, cold rinse, medium heat dry, or line dry.
